We had warm weather today, but the wind was howling so much that it was hard to be out in it without shelter. Here in Idaho we have a lot of wind...wind farms dot all of the nearby foothills. There are puddles of water everywhere but roads are dry and brown grass is exposed. This sporadic weather is pretty normal but it is always a little nervewracking to see it try to warm up too soon. My fruit trees need the moisture as well as the cold to keep them from coming out of dormancy and dying when our next cold spell hits. Looking at the contours of our land right now shows me where I should put more mulch to take advantage of the pooled run-off. So ready for spring but we still have about 6 weeks left to go before it is really a good time to thaw out.
Also, we have a new goat coming on Saturday. Her name is Athena and she is a registered nubian. She freshened on Wednesday and we purchased her without her kids in tow because we want the milk to ourselves. After milking my friend Crystal's mini-goat for a week I see that home-grown goats milk goes a lot further than what we can buy in the store. Usually we go through a gallon a day if we are making yogurt if we use cow's milk. The goat we milked gave a quart a day and it was so rich we couldn't keep up with it, didn't matter if it was yogurt or milk. So I am confident that this new little doe will have enough milk for us to drink until Chamomile freshens in April.
