Athena has arrived! She kidded on the 13th and she we picked her up this afternoon. She is a registered nubian, and this is her first kidding as a yearling. The lady we bought her from milked her a little but left the kids on as well. When she arrived here the teats were terribly chafed, bloody, and a little scarred. So I stole some of the lanolin out of my husband's reloading room and slathered the affected areas until there was an obvious change in her pain. This is her third day and she is giving 3 pints per milking, which if her milk is as rich as our neighbor's doe (related to her) then it will be plenty until our other doe kids the second week of April.
Our other animals are so funny. Have you ever seen someone milk a goat with a cat on their head? Tonight one of our kittens was so interested in what I was doing that she climbed up my back and clung to my head while trying to stretch far enough to see into the jar. I would scoot her off and she would climb back up--6 times. How can you throw her her out when she is being so cute? I have to do something though, the goat is creeped out by my having two heads instead of one.
Since I wrote this post we have had troubles healing up some scabs left by overly-enthusiastic kids. Here is the video of how we have treated her.
