What are my hats in a typical day? Milkmaid, chicken husbandman, arborist, wife, mother, 1st grade teacher, preschool teacher, housekeeper, and chef. This blog is a little bit cathartic. My journal entry to myself of what I am doing; what I want to be doing; and what I want to change. So far our biggest success has been the animals. Our freezer is full of amazing, high-quality meat. Our fridge is full of amazing, high-quality milk, eggs, ricotta, kefir, and cheese.
My animals are pretty minimal in the upkeep department. What takes up the majority of my resentment time? My trees. And yet the only solution to the problems with our property is --- trees. There is no shade, so there is only heat. But since there is no shade nothing will grow --- including trees.
My neighbor has amazing trees, his property looks like the oasis that I want mine to be some day. But he waters every hour of every day, which is not something I believe in or have enough water to replicate. My degree is in hydrology, specifically underground water systems and supplies. When we use copious amounts of water to keep unnatural ecosytems alive we are hurting our future, not helping it. So back to the drawing board: how to bring life to our barren land without water or trees?
